2007 Crime Statistics Summary

The Valparaiso Police Department has released the city’s 2007 crime statistics.  In 2006 the city recorded 1245 major crime incidents and in 2007 a total of 1004 crimes were recorded. A decreased of 241 incidents from 2006 to 2007.  

There were no murders in 2007, and there were decreases in the categories of rape, battery, theft, vehicle theft and arson. The only two categories to rise were robbery and burglary. A large reduction in the category of theft, down 225 cases from 2006, was due to many of the local gas station converting to all pre-paid pumps.

A total of 1725 traffic crashes were reported in 2007, an increase of 42 from 2006. In 2007, 298 individuals were injured in vehicle crashes a decrease of 30 from the previous year (even with more crashes fewer individuals were reported injured). One fatal crash was again reported in 2007.  Listed below is a breakdown of the major crime categories.
