Indiana Handgun Permit Application Instructions

• You may apply no more than 180 days (6 months) before your current permit expires.
• You must complete the permit process at your local police agency before your permit expires, to be allowed to carry while your application is being processed. If your permit has expired, you cannot carry while the renewal is processing.

Go to http://aries.in.gov/firearms/permit.aspx to fill out your application. All Porter County residents should choose Porter County, and click submit.

Once you’ve submitted your application you have 30 days to visit your local police agency to complete the application process. Residents of Valparaiso that live inside the city limits will come to the Valparaiso Police Department, residents that live outside the city limits will go to the Porter County Sheriff’s Department (2755 S State Road 49/ 219-477-3000)

1. The local fee (see table below) is paid to the Valparaiso Police Department in the form of cash, check, or money order (made payable to the Valparaiso Police Department).
2. The state fee (see table below) is paid to the State of Indiana in the form of a money order or cashier’s check.

You may complete your application Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM (except holidays). Please remember to bring the following:

• Your Indiana driver’s license or picture ID with your current address. You must show proof that you live in the Valparaiso city limits with either your ID or a current utility bill.
• Proper forms of payment for the state and local fees
• Your current handgun permit if applicable

When you arrive your application will be reviewed, signed, and you will be fingerprinted. You will receive a pre-addressed envelope to mail paperwork and the state fee. Your permit will be mailed directly to your home within 60-90 days.
