K-9 | Emergency Response Team Members (ERT) | Records Division
The largest and most visible division in the Valparaiso Police Department is the patrol division. Currently the patrol division is supervised by Captain Michael DeHaven.
Officers are divided into four crews that work 12 hours shifts. Individual crews have immediate supervisors of Lieutenants and Sergeants. The City of Valparaiso is divided into different districts and officers are assigned to each district. When officers are assigned to particular areas of the city, it provides blanket coverage and enhances quicker response times when officers are needed throughout the city. The patrol division prides itself on providing a quick response and serving the community.
Every officer assigned to the patrol division is assigned a fully marked police car. The higher the visibility of police presence in the community, the less likely criminal activity will occur.
Captain Michael DeHavencan be contacted by e-mail at mdehaven@valpopd.com or by telephone at (219) 462-2135.

The Valparaiso Police Department currently utilizes three K-9’s:

Britta (Officer Jason Hamilton) |

Frida (Officer Todd Kobitz) |
All are trained in narcotic detection and tracking. Each K-9 team participates in numerous weeks of training throughout each year. Since the establishment of the program, the K-9 teams have contributed to numerous narcotic arrests and apprehension of subjects through their tracking skills.
Each K-9 is a sworn member of the police department and lives with the officer and their family. Constant attention is given to the health and care of the department’s dogs.
The Valparaiso Police Department has formed a Canine Association to help support the program. This association will play a valuable role in helping the department maintain a K-9 program. For additional information about the association, please call (219) 462-2135 or ask us online.
